The two creatures pocket the rats "for later" and there's a brief scuffle, the uninjured one that Alicia healed wins and keeps the hand as a particularly tasty treat for later on.

It seems the writer is trying various alchemical mixtures, to make cheap potions for farmers to get better harvests and more animals.
